Stanger foreman’s faith drives growing charity to support vulnerable communities
Thabiso Makhaye hopes to support children's home across the North Coast.
Siza Water maintenance foreman Thabiso Makhaye is leading a growing humanitarian initiative through his Psalms 91 Charity Foundation, supporting some of KwaDukuza’s most vulnerable residents.
Established last year, the NGO has grown steadily, expanding both its reach and impact.
“We currently employ one full-time staff member and five part-time staff members who assist with programmes, donation co-ordination and community outreach,” said Makhaye.
Operating from his home in Stanger, the foundation has already made a visible difference.
It has supported local children’s homes, including Othandweni Children’s Home in Stanger. Groutville High School matriculants received shoes and stationery, while Yilolelidwala Crèche in Thembeni benefitted from clothing and toy donations. Lunch packs were also distributed to Summerhill House during outreach programmes.
“Initially our support focused on a few families and one children’s home. Thanks to growing community and corporate support from Stanger and Ballito, we are now reaching much further,” said Makhaye.
The foundation has recently joined The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund as a beneficiary, marking the start of a promising collaboration and the fund sponsored biscuits and juice for a Christmas party held last Friday.
The NGO is currently seeking storage boxes and T-shirts for its volunteers.
Makhaye, who grew up in Illovo, said his Christian upbringing inspired a strong desire to help others. This became more structured in 2019 when he and friends conducted door-to-door prayer sessions in Durban and Groutville, raising donations for underprivileged households.
“I used to fund the organisation entirely from my own pocket. Now I contribute between 50% and 70% towards planned outreach initiatives,” he said.
Looking ahead, the foundation aims to establish permanent offices in Ballito or Stanger to provide direct access to assistance and information. To achieve this, additional sponsorship and community support are needed.
