Call for sponsors to empower local women at Grace Church sewing programme
The Owesifazane Onethemba programme has helped many women become financially independent since launching in 2019.
Owesifazane Onethemba (Woman of Hope) is seeking sponsors to help women from local communities access its life-changing sewing and mentorship programme in 2026.
The initiative selects 16 women per campus from Ballito, Melville, Shayamoya and Cornubia, offering them a chance to gain practical skills, spiritual support and a pathway to economic independence.
For R2 500, a sponsor can fully fund a student’s 16-week journey, covering all materials, equipment, meals and transport, so participants can focus entirely on learning and growth.
Founded in 2019 by Colleen Blew and Jenny Pringle, the programme combines sewing training, faith-based mentorship through the Alpha course and a supportive community that uplifts and empowers. It is supported by Grace Aid, the skills development arm of Grace Church.
To date, more than 200 women have graduated from the programme, with 53 launching small businesses and 13 securing formal employment.
“Sponsorship helps change the lives of the women we take into our programme,” said Blew.
“Everything they need is provided, allowing them to focus on building a brighter future.”
At a recent graduation event held at Grace Church, two vibrant groups of women walked the runway in garments they had created themselves, celebrating not just new skills, but new confidence and purpose.
Graduate Lerato Ntholeng said the programme had given her more than just sewing skills.
“I have gained confidence, patience and a sense of purpose. These skills empowered me to start my own business and contribute to my family’s well-being.”
Owesifazane Onethemba continues to thread together faith, skill and opportunity, creating a ripple effect of hope throughout the North Coast.
