Extra cops and security boost for festive season
A thousand extra constables will be deployed across KZN on a revolving basis.
More than 1 000 police constables will be deployed across the province during the festive season, with plans in place for districts to support one another if the need arises.
This according to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, speaking at a press briefing hosted by Enterprise iLembe last Thursday.
Although Netshiunda did not confirm the exact number of officers to be deployed in the iLembe District, he said police have identified crime hotspots and deployed scouts on major routes to monitor potential threats.
“Police officers are restricted from taking leave until January, unless for medical reasons. This is a critical time of the year, and we need all officers on duty,” said Netshiunda.
Mandeni Mayor Thabani Mdlalose stressed the importance of community involvement in keeping holidaymakers safe.
“While police are doing their part, safety must also be maintained by our communities. Tourists must feel safe at all times. We need to keep our areas clean, crime-free and enjoy the festive season responsibly. Alcohol is not allowed on our beaches,” said Mdlalose.

He added that a safe and welcoming environment benefits not only visitors but also local small businesses, which rely heavily on festive season trade.
Meanwhile, the Ballito and Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch, working with the iLembe Chamber, private security companies, the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) and ward councillors, have developed a joint safety plan for the beaches.
Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Morne Steffens said the plan includes checkpoints at all Ballito and Salt Rock beaches to prevent alcohol and braai equipment from being brought onto the sand. This will continue until January 11.
“Let us enjoy our beaches and the festive season without incidents. We are a holiday town that hosts thousands of visitors, and it is our responsibility to keep the area safe and welcoming,” said Steffens.
KDM lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu said 55 lifeguards will be on duty daily from 6am to 6pm. He urged beachgoers to swim only at protected beaches, avoid alcohol and seek help from lifeguards when unsure.
