Guzana school vegetable garden springs to life with community support

A formerly functioning garden at the school had been stripped of its crops by thieves.

What began as an abandoned patch of land has blossomed into a flourishing garden of hope at Nkobongo’s Guzana Secondary School.

The garden had previously been stripped of its crops and become overgrown, but was quickly taken up as a community project when the request for help was spread in September this year. School staff, pupils and volunteers had cleared the space, but needed assistance to kickstart the regrowth.

Seeds were soon donated by Carina Roos from Mayford, while Zimbali Rotary members, Salt Rock residents and ward councillor Collen Mdletshe offered support.

For Simbithi resident Karenne Jo Bloomgarden, who helped create the original vegetable garden and spread the call for help, the results are an example of community in action.

“When I go and see what these students have done on their own time, even coming in on Saturdays, I want others to see what is possible. I am so proud of these kids,” she said.

Learner support agent Thembelihle Khanyile said the garden will help the wider school community, where food insecurity is a daily concern.

The school is appealing for donations to erect tunnels or install shade cloth above the garden, as well as volunteers to assist with clearing an area for a planned separate community vegetable garden.

Call Khanyile at 083 581 9115, or Karen Doveton at 084 900 5444 if you would like to get involved.
