Search continues for missing swimmer off Thompson’s Bay

Two holidaymakers had been swimming at the beach early this morning when they got into difficulty.

Emergency services are continuing a search for a swimmer reported missing off Thompson’s Bay in Ballito early on Friday morning.

KwaDukuza Lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu said he received the emergency call at about 5.30am, prompting a coordinated search operation.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick, jet skis and drones were deployed as part of the search, involving KwaDukuza lifeguards and IPSS Search and Rescue teams.

The missing swimmer is an Indian male of  about 40-years-old who was visiting the area with his family from Newcastle.

He had gone swimming with a friend in the early hours of the morning.

Xulu said the two men were swept out to sea, but a fisherman was able to rescue the other man.

Despite extensive search efforts from the water and air, the missing swimmer has not yet been found.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when entering the ocean, particularly during early morning hours and have indicated that updates will be provided as the search continues.
