Gift-wrapping drive at Ballito Junction raises R108 000 for Dolphin Coast wildlife rescue

More than 50 volunteers gave up their time to wrap gifts this past festive season, often spending hours on their feet.

Ballito Junction’s festive season brought more than just shopping and celebration, it also raised an impressive R108 000 for wildlife conservation through a special gift-wrapping initiative.

Each year, Ballito Junction selects a local charity to support during the festive season. For 2025, Wildlife Rescue Dolphin Coast, founded by Lindy Elmes, was chosen in recognition of its hands-on work protecting animals in distress. The organisation regularly responds to emergency call-outs involving birds, small mammals and reptiles, many of which would not survive without urgent care.

The campaign’s success was driven by dedicated community members. More than 50 volunteers gave up their time to wrap gifts for shoppers, often spending long hours on their feet. Among them was Dolphin Coast resident Zanele Mthimkhulu, who volunteered several hours each day throughout the campaign.

Also standing out was Margot Oldreive (80) of Sheffield, whose energy and commitment inspired fellow volunteers and shoppers alike.

Wildlife Rescue Dolphin Coast also praised the involvement of young volunteers participating through community service programmes, noting the experience helped instil environmental awareness from an early age.

Elmes thanked Ballito Junction for the support.

“Not only did they provide the materials, space and promotion, but the entire team, from management to staff, went above and beyond. This generosity directly supports our mission and helps us rescue and care for more wildlife. We truly appreciate every one of you,” said Elmes.
