Man presumed drowned at Casuarina Beach

The search was aborted because of poor sea conditions.

A 23-year-old man went missing off the unprotected Casuarina Beach this morning and is presumed drowned.

The man went swimming with friends just before midday, soon getting into difficulty and disappearing beneath the water.

His friends raised the alarm and teams from Specialised Rescue Unit Ballito and IPSS Search and Rescue, as well as eThekwini lifeguards all responded.

“An extensive in-water, drone and shoreline search were carried out by the teams, but unfortunately the search had to be aborted due to bad weather, strong winds and rough sea conditions,” said Specialised Rescue Unit commander, Quentin Power.

“We can’t stress enough how important it is that everyone should swim at protected beaches where there are lifeguards on duty as incidents can happen very fast.”

The search will restart once conditions allow.
