KwaDukuza and Mandeni residents are urged to prepare for possible flooding after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall.

The warning is in effect from midday today (July 28) until midnight on Wednesday (July 29), with persistent heavy rain expected along the coast and adjacent inland areas.

An orange Level 6 warning means there is a “high likelihood” of “significant impact” in the affected areas.

The warning is in effect in KwaDukuza and Mandeni locally, along with eThekwini, Big Five Hlabisa, Mtubatuba, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi and Umzumbe.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, said provincial disaster management teams are closely monitoring conditions following the escalation of the weather warning.

According to SAWS, the heavy rainfall could lead to widespread flooding of roads, bridges, rivers and both formal and informal settlements. Fast-flowing streams and rising water levels also pose a serious risk to human life.

Authorities have further warned of major traffic disruptions caused by flooded roads, possible interruptions to essential services such as water, electricity and communications, as well as damage to infrastructure, particularly mud-based homes.

Buthelezi urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid unnecessary travel and to use alternative routes where possible. He also warned residents not to attempt to cross flooded roads, low-lying bridges or fast-flowing streams, especially where water is above ankle height.

Residents living in low-lying or flood-prone areas are advised to move valuables above expected flood levels, switch off electricity at the main supply point if flooding threatens their homes and relocate livestock to higher ground where possible.

Emergency services have urged the public to remain alert, monitor official weather updates and report any emergencies to the relevant authorities immediately.
