From putting food on family tables to providing safer accommodation and helping young people pursue their studies, community support continues to make a tangible difference through The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund.

At the fund’s AGM, held in Ballito on August 19, co-ordinator Charmaine Premlal highlighted the partnerships and fundraising events underpinning its work with orphaned and vulnerable children across the greater iLembe District.

During the first six months of 2026, the fund directed R492 071.61 towards beneficiaries and projects, while income of R355 784.22 was received during the period ending June 30.

Support came from individuals, businesses, churches, trusts and community organisations, alongside fundraising initiatives. Premlal told the AGM that the Potjie n Punch Party, Women In Action Golf Day and Ballito Open Golf Day had been standout fundraisers, each achieving record totals.

Community support also extends well beyond cash donations. In-kind contributions valued at R85 119.07 included the Soup, Socks and Snuggles Campaign, birthday celebrations and Mandela Day activations, supported by a network of local businesses and organisations.

Among the fund’s major costs during the first half of 2026 was R111 580 for food parcels distributed through Lali Food to families facing food insecurity.

A further R96 328.23 went towards the Safe Haven Building Project in Ntshawini, KwaDukuza. Work there has included improved drainage, replacement sewage pipes, two new toilets and showers, concreting outside the kitchen and construction of a stand for a JoJo tank.

Isinakekelo Centre in Thembeni also benefitted, receiving R32 000 towards much-needed bunk beds. The fund additionally provided six children’s tables and 24 chairs.

Other assistance included R20 530 to the Practising Christian Outreach Trust, R10500 for the Nkobongo Resource Centre, R12 412.40 towards food assistance, tables and chairs through the St Vincent de Paul Society, R4 000 in transport assistance to Enduduzweni Community Care Centre and R7 200 in tertiary student bursaries.

Administrative and operational costs totalled R149 646.06, covering the management, governance and co-ordination of donations and programmes, fundraising event costs and banking charges.

While spend exceeded income during the six-month period, this did not represent a funding shortfall.

Major projects drew on previously accumulated reserves and ring-fenced donations, including the Goldrush Group’s R131 000 contribution towards Safe Haven.

The fund’s financial management also received praise at the AGM.

Greenpen Accounting Ballito branch manager Kevin Nel commended the Orphan Fund for its “well-managed and meticulously maintained financial records,” with all audits up to date. He said the company was pleased to be associated with the fund and looked forward to continuing the partnership.

The AGM also highlighted the wider experiences made possible through the fund’s relationships. The Gauteng-based Just Footprints Foundation hosted 11 children and four caregivers from Sinikithemba Organisation and Nkobongo Resource Centre at a five-day camp for HIV-positive children at Twinstreams Environmental Education Centre in Mtunzini last year.

The Orphan Fund remains reliant on the generosity of donors, sponsors and community partners to continue its work.
