Local author Bhekinkosi Ngwenya turns life lessons into new book, What If?

Growing up in an abusive household, Ngwenya turned to writing to cope with a difficult home life.

Author, publisher and literacy advocate Bhekinkosi Ngwenya has released his latest book, What If?, challenging readers to consider how different choices could change their lives.

The inspiration came partly from a Courier article about Story Slam KZN, a local non-profit organisation that brings people together monthly to share true stories. The Groutville author contacted organiser Karen Doveton and took part in a Story Slam event, an experience he said motivated him to write the book.

What If? combines personal stories from Ngwenya’s life with those of people who have inspired him. At its heart is a question: What if one decision could change the trajectory of your life?

“We are often taught that our value is in how we can fit in, how well we follow the rules, how silently we endure our struggles and how effectively we chase the glory of others, but what if you were never meant to fit in?” reads an excerpt from the book.

Growing up in an abusive household, Ngwenya turned to writing to cope with a difficult home life. The experience helped shape his passion for using literacy to empower young people and encourage them not to be limited by their circumstances.

In 2016, he founded A Chorus of Rustics (ACOR), which runs workshops and programmes promoting literature, leadership development, reading and writing.

Through the organisation, Ngwenya has helped more than 60 authors publish their books.

ACOR was also selected to represent KZN at the recent Funda Mzantsi Championships in George.

For Ngwenya, both his writing and work through ACOR are driven by a desire to help others realise their own ambitions.
