Local businessmen changed the face of teaching for one small school by donating a much needed photocopier to Glendale’s Mgigimbe Primary School.
Mgigimbe principal Pam Masinga said the school has been without a photocopier for over a decade and they had to travel to town to make copies while they continued to wait for the government to give them one.
“A few months back we wrote to KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu and asked for his assistance because not having a photocopier was really crippling our school,” said Masinga.
Umhlali Quarry’s CEO Kinyua Gachoki partnered with Alvin Naicker of Crossmoor Transport to help the mayor deliver on his promise to help the school.
“ We set aside a budget in line with our social responsibility to sponsor Mgigimbe Primary with an industrial scanner/photocopier/ printer,” said Gachoki. Gachoki said he valued education and believed that disadvantaged schools should be given both private and public support to produce productive individuals for the future.
“ I attended a rural primary school very similar to Mgigimbe. We used to walk to school without shoes. I remember even for sports we would do athletics and play football with bare feet,” said Gachoki to the pupils.
This land economist told them that education provided a sound foundation which has helped him establish and operate his current businesses.
Masinga thanked the mayor, Umhlali Quarry and Crossmoor Transport for their donation and said the machine will come in handy during exams as there are a lot of papers to copy.
