Darnall Primary School grade seven pupil Kelly Olivier has had a remarkable year on the sporting front, receiving district colours for no less than three sporting codes. These include, Ilembe hockey and northern coastals for both athletics and netball.
Kelly has excelled at primary school both on the sports field and in the classroom and her teachers say her determination to succeed is second to none. At the school’s recent awards day she received the Dux award as well as the English, creative writing, mathematics, natural science, social science and computers subject prizes. She received the netball player of the year award.
She was also awarded the victrix ludorum for both swimming and athletics, as well as the sports girl of the year award.
Kelly’s enthusiasm and drive has resulted in her breaking long standing records in eight different events from two sporting codes, including swimming – 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly – and the 4 x 25m individual medley.
At the inter-schools gala, Kelly won five gold medals and broke the 50m freestyle record.
This young athlete went on to break records on the athletics track as well. She broke the U13 shotput, 75m hurdles, 100m records, and equalled the U13 high jump record.
At inter-schools, Kelly won three gold medals and one silver.  She also broke the inter-schools shotput record.
She is also an avid golfer with a swing that Ernie Els himself would be proud of. In the past year, Kelly’s perseverance and dedication has seen her handicap drop by five strokes.
She is a member of the Darnall Country Club and was the recipient of their junior sportsperson of the year award for 2013.
