Soccer protégé off to Curro

"He will be a legend.”

One of the Brazilian Soccer School (BSS) North Coast’s brightest talents has been awarded a scholarship to Curro Mount Richmore school.
Mnqobi Gumede, a nine-year-old boy who lives with his aunts and uncles in Shakashead, was discovered by BSS North Coast head coach Peter Hooper two years ago. He arrived barefoot for a trial to compete against 10 other kids and earned a BSS development scholarship with ease.
“He will be coached by BSS North Coast until he is 12. He will then go to Gauteng and be assigned to BSS and Supersport United,” said Hooper.
“This is a success story of an orphan who now has the opportunity to make a huge success out of soccer. He will be a legend.”
The former Sizani Primary pupil’s silky soccer skills and goal scoring ability has earned him a sports scholarship at the private school. He will be wearing his new school uniform on May 5, when he attends his first day at Curro.
Hooper believes Mnqobi’s achievements are testament to his strong will and character.
“It takes a unique individual to secure both a sports development scholarship and an Educational Scholarship. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came about because of Mnqobi’s discipline, respect and dedication.”
Mnqobi has developed into a rare talent. Two weeks ago he scored five goals in a league match and last week he netted three goals.
Curro principal Steve Cromie believes helping Mnqobi is another way Curro Mount Richmore can give back to the community.
“This shows where our hearts are. We are happy to welcome Mnqobi to our school,” said Cromie.
Mxolisi Gumede, Mnqobi’s uncle highlighted the importance of the opportunity.
“We have to be excited because there are not many opportunities in government schools. Going from Sizani to Curro is amazing, but it is all up to him now to make it happen,” he said.
Mnqobi wore a big smile on his face when he was told that he would be going to Curro .
“I will miss friends at Sizani, but I am very happy” said Mnqobi .
“At the age of nine, his future is being planned carefully, he is fortunate that he is within the right structures and that there is an opportunity through Curro, BSS and Supersport Utd to fulfill his and our ambitions,” said Hooper.
