Girls with dignity

Margaret Hirsch recently visited Tongaat Secondary to chat to the students about what motivates them and to explain the Girls With Dignity project.

Margaret noticed that statistics indicate that almost nine million school going girls between the ages of 10 and 18 are missing school for one week every month when they have their periods.

This motivated her to fund the purchase of “Girls With Dignity” reusable sanitary packs and pads – which are made by KZN Entrepreneur, Sue Barnes – and personally distribute them to underprivileged girls in schools around the country.

The objectives of the Girls With Dignity project is to support school going girls by providing a solution to managing menstruation with dignity, provide proper sanitary wear, and guidance to living a healthy and hygienic way of life.

As well as distributing the packs, Margaret used the opportunity to set the school a task.

To write an essay about what they would like to achieve in their lifetime. To motivate them, Margaret offered a cash prize to the best essayists at the schools.
