Petco and Litter4Tokens are taking trash and turning it into a brighter future for underprivileged children on the Dolphin Coast.
In a novel initiative, Litter4Tokens is getting children from local schools to collect litter and hand it in for tokens which can then be used to buy food and clothes.
“The children are so thrilled that they are going to be given a chance to feed their families while cleaning up the environment,” said the founder of Litter4Tokens, Clare Swithenbank-Bowman.
Each bag of litter they bring in is exchanged for a token worth R5 that they can redeem to purchase dry goods and clothes from the Litter4tokens shop.
Swithenbank-Bowman told The Courier that they believe in instilling pride and cleaning up the environment not just by giving hand-outs, while at the same time feeding the nation.
Litter4Tokens and Petco launched this initiative in February with educational campaigns at Ithemba Labasha creche and RA Padayachee Primary in Shaka’s Head and Sizani Primary in Foxhill.
Each of these schools will receive a Lifesaver water purification unit sponsored by Petco worth R5 000 for their participation, which will provide them with clean, drinkable water.
“We are pleading with local businesses to help us fund our token shop with dry goods like samp, mielie meal and sugar beans,” said Swithenbank-Bowman.
