With the aim of assisting children develop physically, emotionally and socially, the Tongaat Child Welfare centre (TCW) is committed to helping local youth strive towards reaching their full potential.
Boasting a homework centre, computer centre and reading room, TCW provides multiple opportunities for educational stimulation to children residing in and around Tongaat.
The centre encourages and enhances the reading skills of learners from an early age as well as teaching computer skills which may aid children in completing school projects timeously.
Homework Centre
Often learners do not have adequate facilities to complete their homework. The Homework Centre offers an environment that is conducive to learning and completing homework. Currently the homework center has an average of eight children per day.
Computer Center
The computer center has 12 state of the art computers with free internet for research assignments and projects and free printing. The computer center sees up to 30 learners per day utilising the computers.
Reading Room
The Teena Karim Education Foundation has joined with TCW to launch the Reading Room Project. The project funded by the Gandhi Desai Valjee ex-students Trust, commenced with its first reading on October 25, 2013 at the Truro Empowerment Homework Centre in Plein Street.
The Room has over 600 books available for use by children from the ages of 4 upwards. The reading room has study guides for all set books and maths guide books from grade 4 to matric.
All regular learners are awarded with a fun holiday programme during the mid-term and year-end holidays.
