Bloom Special Needs pupils were welcomed by a big surprise when they started school this year as their little school had a major growth spurt during the holidays.
The incredible R270 000 raised by generous golfers at Bloom’s golf day fundraiser last year has been used to add two new classrooms, an occupational therapy room, a sensory room and a multipurpose kitchen/resource room.
Bloom fundraiser Debbie Nicholson said the additional rooms were a huge need.
“The school has been bursting at the seams, so these extra classrooms have been long overdue. We have no cut off age as our goal is to grow the school with the children. Our oldest pupil is 11 and we would like to start teaching basic kitchen and cooking skills and other practical skills that the children will be able to work with when they are grown up,” said Nicholson.

To help give more special needs children the opportunity to learn and grow with the expert attention they need, Bloom has started a Sponsor a Child programme with Nkosana Buthelezi being their pilot pupil.
“Nkosana was at a government school in Salt Rock and needed a more specific learning programme which is tailored around his needs.
Thanks to the sponsorship of a generous company, he started school at Bloom in October last year and has thrived.
He soon began communicating his needs and wants in a socially appropriate way, and he now has the level of endurance to complete educational tasks. He has learnt to swim in his weekly aqua therapy sessions and he can identify all his colours in English.” His mom, Monica said she is so proud of Nkosana’s progress.
“He is doing so well and he can count now. When I show him photos of the children at Bloom, he can name them all and he gets so excited to go to school everyday,” said Monica.
If your company would like to get involved and bless children like Nkosana with the opportunity to a brighter future, send a mail to Debbie at debbie@bloomcentre.co.za or call her at 032 815 2701.
