When Phila Zulu was a construction worker in KwaDukuza he was already taking from his meager earnings to help four poverty-stricken school children from Groutville buy school uniforms.
The children quickly crept into his heart and he realised he could not stop at four.
There were so many other children who were in dire need.
So he resigned from his job and started a non-profit, Izwi Lothando, and today he is helping more than 100 children around KwaDukuza with school uniforms, cosmetics and food every month.

He is also raising money to help those who want to register for tertiary education.
“Before I resigned I spent my bonus on a Christmas party for the children. It was the joy and excitement from the kids that put the final nail in my idea of resigning,” said Zulu.
The Nongoma-born man has been running Izwi Lothando for three years now and is determined to grow to be able to feed the children under his care every day and ensure that there would always be enough to help township children register at tertiary level.
The humble 35-year-old said he also hopes to one day buy a house that he can turn into an orphanage.
