Walking over the rainbow for Autism

The walk aimed to create awareness about autism and to raise funds for a vocational skills training centre for those affected.

Imbalito Hope College joined the iHope SA Rainbow Walk for Autism event of the Mikhail D iHope Foundation held at Peoples Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium on April 14.

The walk aimed to create awareness about autism and to raise funds for a vocational skills training centre for those affected.

Psychologist and founder of Imbalito Hope College and the Mikhail D iHope Foundation for Autism and other Special Needs, Nirasha Dhaniram hosted the event.

“We called it the rainbow walk because autism is as diverse as the spectrum of a rainbow where no two persons with autism are alike,” said Dhaniram.

Autism has far reaching effects and is often stigmatised because it is not fully understood.

As the mother of Mikhail (17) with autism Nirasha says educating and skilling young adults with autism and other special needs is a new and exciting chapter in the journey of Imbalito Hope College, which currently offers their unique therapy and educational programmes to children ages two to 18 years old.
