Young Ashton star on the rise

She'll be rubbing shoulders with international industry professionals from Disney, Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox and Nickelodeon.

Tasmika Nurbadh is one ambitious matric student.

The 17-year-old aspiring actress from Ashton International College impressed national and international talent scouts at Just You Model and Artist Management Elsubie Verlinden’s talent showcase last year.

This led to an opportunity to travel to America in July 2018, where she spent a month at the prestige New York Film Academy.

Later, in September, she caught the eye of American television actress Kim Myers at an Arts Africa audition in Johannesburg.

This is one of the reasons that in July this year Nurbadh will be heading back to America to be part of the international arts convention, otherwise known as the ARTS International Expo in Orlando Florida.

She’ll be rubbing shoulders with international industry professionals from Disney, Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox and Nickelodeon.

“I have been acting since I was in pre-school. I performed in concerts, talent shows and school productions when I was younger, and I have been in love with acting ever since,” said the young actress.

Her Ashton drama teacher, Angie Logan, said that Nurbadh was a wonderful student to work with.

“She is very driven and motivated and yet very calm and collected. She puts her everything into her work,” said Logan.

“She believes that even though the film industry is a tough one, that ambitious Nurbadh will accomplish everything she has set out for herself.

The young performer looks up to the great Meryl Streep as a role model.

After her matric year, Nurbadh plans to enrol at the AFDA institution for creative arts, in Johannesburg – where she will pursue a film-making degree.

“The industry I want to go into does not guarantee success; it isn’t stable,” acknowledges the young actress. But she appreciates the continuous support her family gives her, and plans to work tirelessly to get to where she wants to be: Hollywood.

“This industry can break and crush you but if you have a good support system nothing will stop you,” said Nurbadh.

Nurbadh hopes to make the most of the experience and exposure she will get abroad. She looks forward to returning to South Africa with a wealth of industry knowledge that will make her a better, more marketable artist on the South African film and entertainment circuit.
