Five-star display by Ashton’s girls’ indoor hockey 2nd team

Ashton's girls' indoor hockey teams completed another set of successful fixtures, winning all nine of their fixtures last week.

Ashton College girl’s indoor hockey 2nd team put on a five-star performance to beat Werda School’s 1st team 5-1 at The Legacy Indoor Arena on Saturday.

Ashton surged into a 3-1 halftime lead before closing the game out 5-1 to cap a dominant display. Werda’s goalkeeper played a blinder, making more than a dozen saves to keep the scoreline in single digits.

Ashton dominated territory and possession, as Werda struggled to contain their hosts.

It’s never easy taking on a team ranked higher, but Ashton dominated from start to finish.

The girls were locked in from their pre-match warm-up routine until the final whistle. Ashton opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well-worked penalty corner routine.

Ashton’s penalty corner routines could not be stopped by the opposition’s defenders.

The home team doubled their lead in the 13th-minute following another lightning counterattack from deep in their own territory.

Despite controlling the pressure and territory, Werda halved the deficit within a minute of the restart. Unlike her opposite number, Ashton’s goalkeeper didn’t have much to do either side of the goal.

Ashton continued the pressure after halftime, scoring twice to seal a comprehensive victory in front of the home supporters.

The goal woke up the away support, who willed on their team with some vociferous support. But the hosts promptly snuffed out the visitor’s momentum with a goal 90 seconds later to extend their lead to 3-1, with two minutes remaining on the first half.

The second half saw the hosts pile on the pressure, with shot after shot being kept out by Werda’s keeper, who was the wall that kept the Durban side in the contest.

However, the pressure told. With less than four minutes to play, Ashton scored twice in two minutes to seal the deal.

Werda’s goalkeeper kept the score from reaching double digits.

Later in the day, Ashton beat Curro Hillcrest 8-0 to make it two wins from two.

Ashton’s 1st team was back to winning ways, beating Hillcrest High School (2-0) and Kloof High School (6-2).

All the age groups were victorious as Ashton claimed a clean sweep of wins.
