Ashton’s 1st hockey teams enjoy successful Cape Town tour

The girl's 1st XI won the shield trophy, while the boy's grabbed three wins in the Mother City.

Ashton International College Ballito’s boy’s and girl’s 1st hockey teams claimed some great results in the 2025 Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament last weekend.

Hosted across eight venues in Cape Town, the annual tournament drew 48 boy’s and 48 girl’s teams from across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, totalling over 1 700 players.

Girl’s XI Results

Ashton’s girl’s 1st team had a tricky start in their first group game, falling 2-0 to Rustenburg Girls High, but went unbeaten for the rest of the tournament.

The opening loss put the Ballito girls into the ‘shield’ bracket, which they eventually won after six successive victories.

They did so by beating York High in a tense final, which ended at 1-1 after regulation, with Kitari van Straaten on the scoresheet for the girls in red and black.

Ashton’s players held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out, scoring all four to win the extra-time decider 4-2.

Captain Morgan Nel was Ashton’s top scorer in the competition with three goals, followed by Poppy Dixon on two and Jemma de Beer, Rosie Dixon, Tina Sarafidis, Nonkosi Xaba and Van Straaten with one apiece.

By way of their shield victory, Ashton finished 17th overall.

Boy’s XI Results

Ashton’s boy’s team started well in Cape Town, winning three of their first five games and drawing the other two.

In doing so, they finished second in both the group and pool stages and entered into the latter levels of the competition.

There they faced some of the top hockey schools in the country and unfortunately lost their last two games against Eldoraigne and Rondebosch, both 2-1.

It was a more than respectable effort from the Ballito boys, who finished an even 24th out of 48 schools.

Jaiden Krambeck top scored with three goals, while Kaiden Webster, Matthew Sanders and Tristan Dutton notched two each and Jaryd Mathias and Adam Venter contributed one apiece.
