Curro Salt Rock 1st XV take positives from Gelofte defeat

Six boys were selected for the Ballito Zonal team to take part in the Zululand trials.

Curro Salt Rock warmed up for the upcoming rugby season with a tough 43-5 defeat to Gelofte Skool on March 28.

Curro’s Head of Rugby and 1st XV head coach Sifiso Shabangu, noted that the youth and inexperience of his team played a role, and that Gelofte had warm-up games under their belt.

It was also Curro’s first preseason warm-up match before the school holidays.

“While the result was obviously disappointing, we understand it was our first outing of the season against a team that has already played a couple of matches,” said Shabangu.

“We’re fielding a young side – with just one matric student and the rest of the squad made up of Grade 11s and 10s – which makes for an exciting prospect.

Despite defeat, Shabangu believes his side will have learned lessons that will stand them in good stead for the upcoming campaign.

“This game served as a valuable building block to assess where we currently stand. There were definitely positives to take from the performance, and the team is motivated to build on those, while also working hard on the areas we identified as needing improvement.

“Looking ahead, we aim to play an exciting brand of rugby that the players can take ownership of and truly enjoy. With the effort being put in behind the scenes, we believe the results will follow.
