Seven Curro Salt Rock athletes qualify for SACSSA nationals

Middle-distance runner Oliver Oosthuizen added two more medals to his collection at the same time.

Curro Salt Rock Primary School’s young athletes excelled at the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Schools Sports Association (KZNCSSA) Provincial Championships last weekend.

Held at the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on August 29 and 30, the event drew athletes from across KZN, including 14 from Curro Salt Rock.

They claimed two medals and several top-10 finishes, with seven selected for the national championships, which will return to Pietermaritzburg on September 26 and 27.

Oliver Oosthuizen was once again the Curro’s outstanding junior athlete, delivering a gold and silver medal in the U13 800m and U13 1500m races respectively.

His performance comes soon after winning double gold at the Port Natal meet on August 16, where he broke association records over both distances.

School head of sport, Phelelani Mtembu, praised the Grade 7 running star.

“Oliver has been a model of consistency in training, showing up with commitment and an eagerness to learn every day,” said Mtembu.

“His success is a reflection of his talent and dedication, and his performances demonstrate that he is on the right path toward his dream of competing at the national level.”

The competition was fierce, but the North Coast athletes did the region proud.

Along with Oliver, Quinn Botha, Zian Brink, Rayne Bryant, Layah Fourie, Hugo Lotriet and Christi Scheepers were also selected to represent KZN at the national championships.

“Over the past seven weeks, our athletes have put in the hard work through morning runs and afternoon sessions, and the results are showing,” added Mtembu.

“As we continue to grow, we remain committed to the process of showing up, working hard and developing young athletes.”
