Reddam pupils dig in to establish vegetable garden at Sinikithemba Organisation

The group enjoyed an unplanned visit from KwaDukuza mayor Siduduzo Gumede during the day out in Groutville.

Reddam House Ballito Grade 7 pupils spent their Saturday helping to establish a vegetable garden at the Sinikithemba Organisation in Groutville.

The initiative was sparked by a Mandela Day visit in August to Sinikithemba, Siyakhula Crèche, and Nkobongo Resource Centre – all beneficiaries of The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund. Inspired by the experience, the pupils chose to make a lasting impact by raising funds to get the vegetable garden project off the ground.

In an unexpected turn, newly appointed KwaDukuza mayor Siduduzo Gumede joined the effort.

“The mayor said he was driving past and saw something going on, so he stopped to see what was happening – it was completely by chance,” said Reddam deputy head of senior preparatory, Andrew Thomas.

The Reddam pupils spent most of Saturday preparing the garden.

Funds raised through a raffle earlier this year were used to purchase essential supplies for Sinikithemba, including fertiliser, bonemeal and vegetable seedlings. Talisman Tools and Emerald Landscaping also donated garden tools and compost. Restore Africa donated all the seedlings.

Reddam pupil Samuel Powell said he enjoyed the morning’s activities.

“It’s very different to see how the vast population of South Africans live compared to Durban, Umhlanga and Ballito, but it was a valuable and worthwhile experience,” he said.

Sinikithemba provides meals for a local after-school programme, and the pupils hope the garden will support this initiative long-term.

“The day went swimmingly. The children learned a lot about gardening, and they are determined to make this a continued success,” added Thomas.
