Smiles and fun hats on Umhlali Prep’s first day back

New Grade 1s were welcomed to big school with plenty of cheer.

Umhlali Preparatory School opened its gates bright and early last Wednesday to mark the start of the school year.

By 6.30am, the 107-year-old school was abuzz with excitement as familiar faces returned and new pupils stepped into their first term.

Grade 1 Head Miss Joe-Mérie Wessels said the first day was a milestone for young pupils, their parents and teachers alike.

Mandisa Cele was all smiles on the first day of school.

“From early-morning routines and last-minute checks to navigating traffic and arriving on time, the day buzzes with nervous excitement,” she said.

As per tradition, staff welcomed pupils in style, donning fun hats and spreading cheer at the gates and across campus.

“The first day of term marks a new chapter for our children as they meet their teachers, find their classrooms and begin formal learning,” said Wessels.

“For parents, it’s a moment filled with pride.”

Hat-trick of teachers: Temelani Sibuta, Hloni Ngidi and Siviwe Bisset welcomed the pupils as they entered the school grounds.

Principal Miss Sandy Wiggill praised the staff’s efforts in making it a memorable day.

“Our campus is alive again with happy chatter. We look forward to a joyful and productive year ahead,” she said.
