First-day jitters as North Coast schools welcome Grade R and 1’s

Youngsters across the North Coast got their first taste of 'big school' last week.

Local schools welcomed the Grade One and Grade R classes last week with open arms – and a few tear-streaked faces.

Excitement ruled at Umhlali Preparatory School for the first day of “big school”. Head of Grade 1, Joe-Merié Wessels, said the children were usually a bit anxious, shy and sometimes a little scared, but they had come to class in good spirits.

Similarily at Curro Salt Rock, Dawnview, Stanger Heights, Aldinville and BW Vilakazi Primary Schools, classrooms were filled with the cheerful buzz of pupils settling into the new school year.

The real drama unfolded in the Grade R sections, where first-day jitters hit hard, and pupils clung to their parents and teachers. But by first break most tears had been replaced by broad, if shaky, smiles.
