Strong sporting week for Ashton across variety of codes

The boy's 1st cricket XI shared the Thomas More College Summer Series trophy after their final was rained out.

Ashton International College Ballito produced an impressive array of performances during Week 6 of the school’s first‑term fixtures last week.

Good results were earned in netball, indoor hockey, golf, waterpolo and cricket, while touch rugby and basketball teams will be looking to bounce back soon.

Ashton’s 2nd action netball team won each of their week 6 matches.

Action Netball

The school’s action netball contingent delivered one of the standout performances of the week, securing six victories from eight matches. The 1st team and U15B side were the only teams to fall short.

The 1st team, facing the strong Danville Park Girls’ High School put up a spirited fight before eventually going down 19-23. The U15B side suffered a 13-4 defeat at the hands of Crawford La Lucia’s U15A team.

However, Ashton’s depth was on full display elsewhere. The U14A and U16A teams both claimed noteworthy victories, while the 2nd team enjoyed an exceptional week, winning both of their fixtures.

They defeated Crawford La Lucia 21-14 and followed up with a convincing 19-7 victory over New Forest High School’s 1st team.

Girls’ Indoor Hockey

Ashton’s girls’ indoor hockey 1st team also delivered an excellent showing at the Thomas More College (TMC) Indoor Summer Series. The Ballito squad won four of their five matches, progressing confidently through the competition until meeting a familiar nemesis in the semi-finals.

Ashton’s 1st indoor hockey team finished third at the 2026 Thomas Moore College Summer Series.

Last year, Ashton fell to Maris Stella in a tense 1-0 final played in Kloof. The Durban school again stood in the way, edging Ashton out 3-2 in another closely contested encounter.

Ashton regrouped well to defeat Hillcrest High School and secure third place overall.

Golf

On the fairways, Ashton’s golfers extended their formidable start to the season with a commanding 8-0 victory over Northwood. The win marked their fourth from five league fixtures, showcasing the growing strength of golf on the North Coast.

Boys’ Basketball

The boys’ basketball teams faced a challenging set of games against Crawford La Lucia, claiming one win from three fixtures.

The 1st team fell 21-23, while the U16A team struggled to gain traction in a difficult 11-39 loss. The U15A team, however, delivered a composed and disciplined performance, earning a 26-13 victory.

Touch Rugby

The girls’ U15 and U19 touch rugby squads had a tough week overall, combining for just one win from four matches.

Water Polo

In the pool, Ashton’s water polo teams produced a strong showing.

The junior girls were particularly dominant, sweeping aside Durban Girls’ High School (DGHS) in a commanding 15-2 victory. The senior girls edged DGHS 9-8 in a tense match but later fell 8-5 to Durban Girls’ College, a perennial water polo force.

Cricket

Both the girls’ and boys’ cricket teams recorded excellent results.

The girls’ 1st team claimed a resounding 86‑run victory over DGHS. Batting first, Ashton posted 131/4, led by a classy 46 from Ariya Hansraj. In reply, DGHS were bowled out for 45, with Sai Subrayen taking 3 wickets for 6 runs.

The boys’ 1st team, competing in the TMC Summer Series, defeated Kloof High School by 57 runs on Friday before overcoming Reddam House Umhlanga by four wickets on Saturday. The final on Sunday against Curro Hillcrest was unfortunately abandoned due to wet conditions and the two teams shared the trophy.

The week also marked a major personal milestone, with Alex Lawrence earning his 50th cap for the 1st team.
