Trophies and triumph across strong Ashton sporting week

School teams are enjoying a great run of form as they head towards the upcoming holidays.

Ashton International College Ballito’s young sports stars recorded a standout week (March 2-8) of performances in golf, hockey and swimming.

Golf

The school’s golfers excelled at both team and individual tournaments held at Umhlali Country Club last week.

First, Ashton became the only co-ed school in history to win the KZN High Schools Nomads Championship on Monday, March 2.

The win qualifies them for the prestigious GolfRSA Schools National Championship later this year.

On Sunday (March 8), Grade 10 pupil Matthew Smith was crowned overall champion at the Umhlali CC Junior Club Championships. Dylan Bezuidenhout (Grade 11) secured the overall nett title.

“It’s special to have won the junior club championship this year. It was great fun to play with my friends,” said Matthew.

“The wind was testing to play in, and to be able to play the golf I did in those conditions, is something I’m very happy with.”

Matthew Smith is the 2026 Umhlali junior club champion.

Dylan praised his teammate’s performance.

“Congratulations to Matt on a great performance out on the course, it is well deserved,” he said.

“It was testing day with some tough windy conditions, but I’m happy that I managed to still put together a decent round.”

Hockey

Ashton’s girls’ 1st team delivered a commanding performance at the Crawford La Lucia Hockey Festival, finishing as deserved champions last week.

Coach Erdine Coetzee commended the side’s effort, saying the team “showed great determination, skill and teamwork throughout the festival.”

Anna Angelopolous and Emmerson van Zijl starred for Ashton at the Crawford La Lucia Hockey Festival.

Ashton captain Anna Angelopolous was named Player of the Festival, while vice-captain, Emmerson van Zijl, scored nine goals to finish as the festival’s top scorer.

The boys’ 1st team also enjoyed a strong start to their season, completing the festival unbeaten. They now prepare for their match against Reddam House Umhlanga tomorrow (March 14).

Swimming

Three Ashton swimmers have been selected to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the 2026 SA Schools Championships in Cape Town.

The inter-provincial schools’ gala is taking place from April 23-27 at the University of the Western Cape. The selected athletes are Olivia Botha (Grade 8, U14), Greg Kalil (Grade 10, U16), and Malakai Seppings (Grade 7).

Ashton agonisingly missed out on D&D gala glory to Curro Hillcrest.

From a team perspective, Ashton came within a single point of winning the Durban and Districts co-ed A League Gala at Curro Hillcrest. The North Coast school finished second the hosts – who won the D&D co-ed gala for the tenth time consecutively.

Curro topped the standings with 244 points, while Ashton finished on 243. Hillcrest High School placed third with 183 points.

Despite the razor‑thin margin, Ashton’s swimmers delivered a series of strong performances that underline the team’s growing depth and competitiveness.
