Curro Salt Rock rugby team finishes Gelofte Night Series on a high

The 1st team will take that momentum into the Easter festival fixtures.

Curro Salt Rock concluded their debut campaign in the Gelofte Night Series with a hard‑earned 25-25 draw against Durban Academy in the 5th/6th playoff match in Pinetown on March 13.

The team lost their first three matches, but bounced back to finish the tournament on a positive note.

The result, secured after sudden‑death extra time, ensured the North Coast school finished fifth overall on points difference – an encouraging milestone in their first season of 15‑man rugby.

Head coach Shaun Blignaut said he was proud of the team’s grit and application.

“It was an incredibly physical encounter with both teams giving everything on the field,” he said.

Durban Academy opened the scoring early in the first half, but Curro responded with composure.

“We dominated the scrums and executed our set plays well, which created opportunities and helped us get over the try line,” said Blignaut.

With the scores level at 25-all at the end of regulation time, the match proceeded to a tense 10‑minute sudden‑death period, where the first team to score would secure victory. Neither side, however, managed to break the deadlock, and after a physically demanding extra session, both coaches agreed to accept the stalemate.

“The boys gave absolutely everything, and both teams left everything on the field,” said Blignaut.

“The boys were exhausted but continued to fight until the end, showing tremendous heart, determination, and team spirit.”

Scrumhalf Chase Kilian, named player of the match, delivered a standout performance and was one of Curro’s try scorers.

“They were tough opposition, but we showed resilience and fought hard from start to finish,” said Kilian.

“I felt I had the freedom to run with the ball, which allowed me to take opportunities, side-step defenders and make some strong, impactful hits on defence.”

“What stood out the most was our determination and how we never gave up, even when the pressure was high. This game showed the potential we have as a team. I want us to keep growing, improving our teamwork, and pushing each other to be better.”

Meanwhile, Curro also participated in netball at the Night Series. The girls’ 1st team went undefeated for the second year running to claim back-to-back series titles – beating the hosts in the final.
