Two Bits, September 20

It was an action weekend, Miss Ballito on top of the SA-New Zealand Test, on top of Street Heroes on top of Strictly Come Dancing finals!

The ladies of the Rotary club of Zimbali certainly showed how a razzle-dazzle evening should be organised. The Miss Ballito contest held at Collisheen was the best yet for keeping the action flowing. It was inspired thinking to bring Alistair Sparks onboard as emcee – he loosened up the audience nicely.
Shelley Buckle will be a great Miss Ballito I am sure, though at the final gun it could have gone any which way between Shelley and her two princesses, Tiffany Gore and Nozipho Msweli. All three were neck and neck all the way through and separated only by fractions of a point in the end.
Emirates’ prize of two return tickets to Dubai, plus automatic entry into the Miss SA contest and loads of other prizes are big drawcards for the contest, going forward. That the organisers raised R126 000 is brilliant, and that money will all go back into the community, in line with Rotary’s motto of helping those less fortunate than themselves.
I am very proud that the Courier and our Get It Ballito-Umhlanga magazine were media sponsors and will certainly be ready to step up next year.
The venue and décor were great, the show flowed smoothly and a prezzie of a slab of chocolate at my place certainly grabs my attention. Pity about the food, though. I’m still digging bits of that starter out of my teeth. Old boot doesn’t come close to describing it.

That test! ‘Kill the ref’ web and Facebook pages appeared overnight. Just when it looked like South African rugby fans were getting ready to declare a total boycott of frog’s legs and Camembert, the IRB was wise to admit that the red-carding of Bismarck du Plessis had all been a dreadful mistake.
Rugby has been getting uncomfortably closer to American sports, with instant replay, giant screens and electronic wizardry giving everybody on the stands and at home breathtaking close-ups of the action, but forgetting that the ref is just a man. He can’t be everywhere at once and doesn’t have the benefit of slo-mo, so mistakes will be made.
We know the Boks were the better team, and that’s all that counts.

The Strictly Come Dancing final on Sunday night was almost a repeat of Friday’s Miss Ballito. There was absolutely nothing separating the three finalists and it could have gone either way.
Louis Smith came from behind to take the prize, though he wasn’t my favourite – I thought Denise van Outen would take it. Or Kimberley Walsh. They were all phenomenal dancers after only three months of training. Made me quite nostalgic for my ballroom dancing days – the lifts, the soaring, and the tripping over my two left feet to fall flat on my face!

Our hardworking team at Wordsmiths are very proud of our addition to the Get It magazine stable, Get It Kids. Salt Rock cutie Teyla Atwell is our first cover star and the mag has fun, helpful articles on choosing a pre-school (and a dog), fashion, cooking and what to do in the holidays.
Get It Kids will be available at schools and other ‘high kids traffic’ places and will appear at least twice a year.
Well done everyone!

A guy broke into my house last week. He didn’t take my TV, just the remote. Now he drives by and changes the channels.
Sick bastard!
