EFF has been described in many different ways by its charismatic leader Julius Malema. I’ve been following his interviews, opinions in the form of open letters and public speeches where he always lashes out at the leaders and policies of his former party, the ANC.
In my opinion he fails as a leader to come out of his cocoon of anger and hatred of the ruling party and give us what exactly him and his movement, platform come political party stands for. So far I hear nothing new beside his famous rhetoric of economic freedom and land reform.
Without proper direction and guidelines, I’m afraid Malema and EFF are just another group of angry and disgruntled men and women in red hats. They don’t convince me because in their leadership there are dodgy characters who I think are enjoying economic freedom or have tasted it and lost it one way or the other.
I see EFF becoming more of a support group for mostly those who had disappeared from the limelight who are using the EFF to become relevant politically or otherwise. EFF supporters comprise mostly people who felt sorry for Malema after his fallout with the ANC, those who needed a platform where they will show their undying support for the “Commander in Chief”, as they call him. I don’t see how Kenny Kunene, Malema, Fana Mokoena, Hlomla Dandala and Dali Mpofu can share one spotlight. Along the way egos will clash and the poor supporters will find themselves with nothing or maybe with two EFFs, as we saw happening with Cope.
Lastly, EFF should be clear on their policies and give careful thought about their idea of the future of the country in order for them to be taken seriously. Anger and militancy have passed their expiry date in South African politics. With guidance and discipline EFF will be a force to be reckon with come 2014.
