I read the story about the birds in Chakas Cove (The birds got here first, November 29) and also have a story about nesting birds. Only trouble is my birds have an ongoing problem.
I have had a pair of Hadedas nesting in a tree in my garden for three years, and they have managed to rear about five babies which we have watched and enjoyed.
We have neighbours who have decided to use the nest, the birds and the babies as targets and have used BB guns and a paint ball gun to do so. I cannot get a photo as I was asked to do, due to furtive movements, have observed Dad and Oupa watching while junior used a BB gun on the three babies in the branches while learning to fly and I have picked up BB gun pellets and paint balls in my yard over the years. We stopped the gardener from next door shooting at the Paradise fly catcher with a catapult.
We have a big garden and encourage the birds into our yard, together with the monkeys, mongooses, frogs snakes and anything else that needs refuge as there isn’t much left for them in the area other than development and walls. We have endured human noise pollution without complaining. What do we do?
