Rain Farm Game and Lodge

Our Foodie David Hoehler reviews the Rain Farm.

After the Taste of the Dolphin Coast review, I really wanted to see what else Rain Farm had to offer.

It is amazing that just 20 minutes inland from Ballito, surrounded by sugar cane, we have this little gem of an establishment that makes you feel like you are in the middle of the bush.

When I entered the reception area the first thing I noticed was the wonderful smell of thatch, which brought back some good memories for me.

The staff do a fantastic job of making you feel welcome.

The dining area is on a beautiful deck overlooking the grass plains with the tranquil water feature running down into a swimming pool.

The menu is quite simple with a touch of flair here and there.

One dish that caught my eye was the venison pie (just right for lunch on a game farm don’t you think). If you are concerned about what you eat, venison is a great option. Some people just do not like the idea of venison but bear in mind that it is 100% organic, so no hormones and antibiotics to worry about. It is also leaner than beef in most cases.

The pie was sublime. The pastry was crispy, the filling had been stewed well with all the flavours married together and the meat was extremely tender.

There is a bit of a wait for the pie but it is well worth waiting for.

We also ordered a beef wrap but unfortunately the waiter brought us a chicken wrap, another example of why waiters should write orders down. He did offer to exchange it but why waste good food? The wrap was a little disappointing as it was served quite hot. Personally if I am ordering a wrap I expect it to be served cold or even at room temperature, but not hot. I have a feeling it had been sitting on the hot plate while the pie was being prepared.

Rain Farm is open to the public but I would suggest phoning to make a booking just in case, especially on the weekends as they are extremely busy with weddings. With everything they have to offer, I can understand why.
