Surely the recent performances – especially the current test match – reflect the sad and slow demise over the past year or two of our previously laudable record. Graeme Smith’s recent performances for a start have shown that he can no longer give the leadership he used to if he wants to put runs on the board as well. His captaincy and especially his field placing leave much to be desired. Yesterday, for instance, I watched Australian batsmen hit four boundaries to fine leg in the space of seven balls. Smith didn’t move one fielder!
Perhaps it’s time for him to hand over the captaincy to AB de Villiers, who I hear is now considered one of the best wicket keeper/batsmen in the world. And perhaps it is time the selectors started considering candidates like Quinton de Kok, David Miller and Abbot to put some young. strong and enthusiastic spirit back into the Proteas.
