I worked as a party agent on election day representing the ACDP in a number of voting stations and I was astonished to see IEC officials having double standards and being corrupt.
The election was supposed to be free and fair but what I saw was the total opposite. When I was at the party agent training IEC officials told us that no one working in the demarcated area within the voting station was allowed to wear colours representing their specific parties.
In Nkobongo the presiding officer was wearing a jacket with the colour of a political party. I asked him why is he wearing that jacket: he told me that he was feeling cold. I lodged a complaint but nothing was done about it.
In another incident in Etete a man canvassing at the entrance of the voting station told someone with no identity document to go inside and speak to the presiding officer and that he would be allowed to vote. An objection was made inside the station and the man was sent off without voting. The presiding officer was about to let the man vote because he represented a certain party.
At another voting station in Shayamoya, two party agents from the same party were on numerous occasions called to assist voters who did not know how to cast their vote. On asking the presiding officer why this was happening no answer was given.
These were only a few of the irregularities I noticed. If the party agents were not present, I can only imagine what happened throughout the rest of the country on that day. Was it free and fair?
