Zilungisele School has indeed been a catalyst for change in the area – resulting in more and more parents wanting their children go to this school.
Their biggest obstacle is transport. I myself transport six children in my open bakkie to this school in the morning. I have seen at least five vehicles from next door Mgigimbe Village acting as taxis for more children going to this school as well as the high school in Groutville.
The parents/guardians ( who are mostly cane cutters) have to pay for this – something they cannot afford.
Mr Khumalo (the headmaster) himself has on numerous occasions tried to address this issue with the department of education without any success. The situation is in actual fact not just applicable to Zilungisele, but all the other schools in this area. Why is it still such a struggle for these children to get the education they deserve? Where is the free transport?
