On behalf of the Democratic Alliance, my wife and I thank the residents of ward 22 for coming out to vote in last week’s by-election. The by-election was brought about by the promotion of the previous councillor Ann McDonnell to the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg after the national elections held earlier his year. Ann has been a councillor in the greater Ballito area for some 20 years serving in both ward 6 and lately in ward 22.
When she was asked to come and campaign for the DA in the new ward 22 she won the seat with a 200 vote majority and then won the ward in the 2014 general election with more than 2000 votes increased majority on a 75% plus poll.
On July 2 the DA retained the ward with a 983 vote majority on a 41.1% poll which was way up on the normally expected 25% turn out. The DA garnered 1833 votes or 67.12% of the vote to the ANC’s 898 or 32.88%.
It is also incumbent on me to thank the wonderful team that worked on this campaign so selflessly to get me elected, from the office team to the team on the road putting up the posters, I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for the hours they put in.
As the new councillor it is extremely humbling to see that the public of the greater ward 22 are happy to get behind a newbie, as some have so eloquently described me, as someone who may not be able to find Tinley Manor even on a map. Well I can assure you all that I certainly do know where Tinley Manor is, as well as all the other areas in this ward are and will make sure that I visit with you all, as has been the case in the past, on a regular basis to establish what the needs for the area are so we can ensure these requirements are translated into activities on the Integrated Development Plan and subsequently into the annual budgets for KwaDukuza municipality.
I will be working with all entities to ensure that there is a continual focus on issues such as pothole repair, street lights not working or even working all day as well as the other issues that seem to irk the readers of this newspaper on a regular basis. One of the major focus areas will be to ensure clean government and to exercise financial oversight on the expenditure in the municipality. Corruption is not an option on my watch.
Please do not hesitate to pop into our office at the municipal offices at the Salt Rock library should you wish to raise any issues or bring any thing to our attention. Once again thank you all for coming out.
