I refer to the article “Power cuts continue to plague us” (Courier, August 29). I have done a little research on this and relate some of the interesting facts given to me by reliable sources.
One of the main reasons for the numerous power outages we are experiencing, especially in the Salt Rock area, is the fact that the electrical distribution network is old and grossly overloaded in some areas. I am told this overload is in excess of 50% at present and increases during the holiday season. More houses and factories are added to the system every week.
The KwaDukuza municipality realised that something had to be done and apparently came to an agreement with three of the local property developers as follows: the municipality would build a new substation with all the necessary equipment at a cost in excess of R20m and the developers would contribute R13m towards a new cable that had to be laid from Shakaskraal. The municipality built the substation and equipped it.
Unfortunately for the local residents, one of the developers reneged on the deal and the other two withdrew because of this. So the new substation stands unused and we continue to suffer continual power outages until the municipality can find the funds for the cable.
