Dream a little dream

When I was one of the young ones enjoying a summer holiday with my family I never did find out how much that doggy in the window cost and I merely heard about Ol’ Blue Eyes and watched my parents waltz, twist, bop, shake rattle and roll and do the Limbo. It was a time when a white Christmas only came once in a blue moon – but then suddenly things changed.
I began living in a yellow submarine, went ramblin on around my home town of Fish Hoek, usually chasing a band on the run, always followed by a moon shadow and shouting to a guy called Jude – sometimes even looking for an old oak tree to tie a yellow ribbon around.
I would knock three times on a ceiling to get into a party, probably with Matthew and Son, and after some red red wine become some sort of super trooper. I would look to dance with Sweet Caroline (or was it cracklin Rosie?) – but there were so many gorgeous girls around it never had to be only a Kentucky woman.
The first cut was the deepest of course and there were times when a bridge over troubled waters was a huge relief but I found that morning always broke – albeit with a slight headache!
Often I got no satisfaction but then I would stop and think to myself – what a wonderful world – and suddenly there I was – back in my childhood again and I had to let it out – just couldn’t keep it in!
I’m still a solitary man but life is good and I continue to thank Christ for a life filled with a melody of good friends, good memories and many blessings.
Thankfully I’m always able to say ‘hello again, hello’ and am still a believer – so my heartfelt desire at this station in my life is to climb aboard a peace train in this beautiful country and hear the township penny whistle harmonise with the city guitar – aaah – imagine – ‘what a beautiful noise’!
Hey Jude – you coming ? – we’ve got a good clean life to live and a land to heal . . .
