The Dolphins rugby club has been through a torrid time the past couple of years. They had a main sponsor lined up, they branded their kit, then all that followed was promises. No money.
I know of at least one club administrator who reached deep into his own pocket to help out and the club limped along with handouts here and there, all the time begging the sponsor to make good on his promise. Then the so-called sponsor’s lawyer had the nerve to threaten them with court when they aired their grievance in public!
Well, hopefully they can soon put all that nonsense behind them when their new fields and clubhouse are opened next week at Sugar Rush Park, out on the Compensation Flats. They’re hopeful that when they have a permanent home, local business will be more inclined to sponsor them. The Courier has been a small sponsor for a decade or longer, and will continue, but running a club like that is an expensive operation.
I’m sure all rugby lovers agree that the game at a provincial and national level is only as strong as the clubs feeding it, and Dolphins had been doing pretty well in the league before their money troubles.
The president of the KZN Rugby Union, Graham Mackenzie, and CEO John Smit will be guest speakers and officially open the clubhouse, and hopefully kickstart a new, prosperous era for the local club.
