Last Monday l collected my mountain bike from behind the Lifestyle Centre where it had been serviced. On the way home my son followed me in a car to ‘see me through the traffic’.
We passed the Ballito Fire Station and as I was out of the traffic and nearly home he went ahead. That is the last thing l remember until I woke up in the emergency ward at Alberlito Hospital, confused, concussed and completely disorientated.
– to the black car that hit me and did not stop, that was nice of you.
– to my helmet that saved the day, again. Thank you.
– to the Good Samaritan and witness who helped me, called the ambulance but did not leave his name. Thank you very much.
– to the IPSS paramedics who took control. Thank you very much.
– to the nurses at Alberlito ICU. Thank you very much.
– to all my friends who have wished me well. Thank you very much.
That was the third time I have been hit by a car in Ballito in as many years. This time I was lucky and did not break any bones or have serious injuries other than a generous dose of “roasties”.
The lesson: Ballito drivers are the world’s worst when it comes to seeing cyclists. Avoid them and use your mountain bike in the mountains.
To everyone else, have a wonderful New Year.
