Something wonderful and unexpected happened over the past couple of days.

A community that is so often divided came together to fight against the totally unacceptable overuse and abuse of fireworks over the festive season.

A WhatsApp group was set up by a few active Ballito residents who were willing to go above and beyond for this cause.

Over the past few days I have watched this group grow. I’ve witnessed people come together and friendships forged. There’s been laughter, tears, a few choice words for inconsiderate culprits. Constant reassurance from total strangers (now friendly neighbors) for anyone who needed help. It’s been a humbling experience to say the least.

Was the battle won? No. But it’s proved that as a community united, we can make a difference! Together we can do so much more!

I would personally like to thank everyone involved in this especially Matthew, Warren, Isabel, JP and his crew, Ari, Debbie and her husband and their beautiful Boerbul Dekka (the face of the WhatsApp group). Hopefully next year we make an even stronger impact!

Let’s try carry this enthusiasm over to other pressing issues like crime and support our wonderful armed reaction teams!
