Cheating is a tendency which should be rooted out of our system, and those responsible should be identified and accordingly dealt with.
During this period, we find most organisations engaged in “Back-to-School” programmes which on their own are good, yet some, if not most, of these programmes fall short of finding solutions to fundamental educational disparities and remain just window-dressing activities.
What should be or what offers solutions to challenges facing our system, those of absenteeism, late coming, lack of resources, low-pass rates etc, would be concerted efforts by all stake-holders i.e. government, educators, labour, civil society and parents.
We all have a critical role to play in making positive contributions to education rather than offering never-ending criticism without solutions. Business, middle-class people, civil society and municipalities should see to it that learners who may have done well in their studies the previous year are assisted with registration fees and/or study, had they been unable to receive NSFAS funding, or bursaries.
In a society where most people live well below the poverty line, there are children who do not have school uniforms, yet there are people who are well-off financially in the same community. This is one aspect of a capitalist society, we need to combat as a people.
Education is our responsibility as a society, and if it malfunctions, we should not point fingers but ask ourselves, what have we done?
