In response to the letter from Mr Tony Singh (“Why are we singled out for disconnection?” Courier January 30), Sembcorp Siza Water wish to place on record the facts relating to the water shutdowns. No shutdowns are based on targeting race groups. The shutdowns are based on targeting zones within our entire network that are not achieving the 30% reduction in water consumption required per the drought restrictions. We shut down various zones, including the Ballito Business Park, Zimbali, Simbithi, Shakaskraal, etc.
Most zones have shown a significant reduction in their consumption pattern and we wish to thank those consumers who have adhered to the call to reduce water consumption. For zones that are not achieving the required consumption we will be introducing shutdowns during the day shortly, in an effort to reduce water consumption and this may include Shakaskraal.
In terms of the bylaw there is a section dealing with the specification for the installation of geysers and in short it requires that the geyser not operate when there is an interruption to the water supply, which will prevent the geyser from being damaged.
We urge consumers to reduce water consumption as we have been informed by Umgeni Water that the forecast for rain in the Hazelmere Dam catchment is bleak for the next three months.
