Feeble response from toll operator

In response to the editorial comment in TwoBits (March 13) regarding the failure of the toll plaza officials to allow the fire truck access to the fire without having to pay the toll, I would also wish to express my indignation and anger at the petty and feeble-minded response given by the manager of the toll plaza, Ben Reddy. Is this guy for real?
To suggest that the ‘office had to phone ahead to get permission from him’ is one of the most outlandish and ludicrous comments I have heard. Notwithstanding the editor’s spot on sarcasm about the fact that the regular motorist would hardly be driving a fire truck to avoid the toll fees, there are other obvious issues that failed to ignite a spark in Mr. Reddy’s brain.
The simple idea of having to phone in advance to get permission to pass through the toll, implies some magical ability to foretell the impending disaster and the presumption that Mr Reddy will answer his phone. I can almost guarantee that he will not take a call at 2am and I would therefore suggest that if you know your house is about to burn down in the middle of the night, make an early call – during office hours – and hope you have the right number and that he takes your call.
I cannot imagine that it would not be standard procedure to expeditiously allow any marked, emergency vehicle to use the toll without demanding payment. This includes police vehicles, ambulances and fire trucks. Curious to know what happens to the blue light brigade?
