The reply by George MacGregor (Bad enough without taxis as well, Courier, May 8) shows little consideration for the taxi drivers and the commuters.
He is entitled to his opinion, and a small taxi rank near the station would be a good idea and benefit commuters, but the main rank should be behind Ballito Bay Mall as suggested. I make the following points to counter his letter:
1.We cannot use the excuse that Simbithi Drive is too congested during peak holiday periods – we need to consider those of us who live in Ballito all year round.
The taxi rank would not be in Simbithi Drive and is well positioned for all the commuters, as is the present one. We cannot allow a few busy weeks of the year to influence our planning.
2. It would enhance business in the Ballito Bay Mall which is fairly marginalised.
3. Taxi drivers would be ticketed if they use Simbithi Drive for dropoffs etc.
4. How does Mr MacGregor expect town and mall workers to get to Builders Express?
5. Bear in mind that this rank also serves travellers going north and south from Ballito, even as far as Durban.
All the benefits listed in my previous letter make this an obvious position.
