Ballito needs to take a long term view with regard to taxi rank planning. One taxi rank will not be enough as our town grows.
In Durban there are several, ie Warwick Triangle and the Workshop. Commuters going to Umhlanga catch taxis opposite the fire station. Those going to Mt Moriah, adjacent to the fire station and those going to the ‘Berg and Pietermaritzburg, near the TB clinic etc. We need to do likewise. Some commuters, say to Shayamoya using taxis parking behind the garage, some going to Etete, in the existing venue, and some could even use the roof of the Ballito Mall, bringing much needed business to this dying shopping centre.
Durban station had the foresight to maximise the parking on its roof and allow a church and offices to be built up there. If we added a few toilets it would make a most suitable central venue for weary commuters without them having to walk right across town to their taxi rank and they could easily buy groceries downstairs before hopping onto a taxi.
The person who suggested Ballito Mall for pensioners had a good idea, as pensioners who can no longer drive run into problems. La Ballito Flats near the beach are a better bet though. Stunning views, big lawns, beach walks and benches await you. A superette, doctor, dentist, barber, pizza place, restaurant, pizza place and clothing store are five minutes walk away . . . just a short walk next door . . . not even a road to cross. Taxis for carers are nearby. It’s perfect.
Ballito has everything except places for the elderly, and taxis ranks with toilets and benches for our valued workers.
Think outside the box everyone! Let us maximise the places we already have.
