There has been a lot of hype recently about our beaches achieving Blue Flag status, I would like to bring to your attention the situation we recently experienced at Westbrook Beach.
As it is just down the road from us we decided to go there. Arriving there on Sunday, October 18 at about 10am we were met with a relatively clean beach and a peaceful atmosphere.
Unfortunately this did not last long as at about midday cars started arriving and after parking commenced to party with loud music drowning out the sound of the sea, dancing, the consumption of alcohol and four letter words in abundance. It was sad to see people many with children leaving.
Furthermore some of these partygoers were sitting with the lifesavers whilst drinking beers. I did not see the lifesavers drinking but certainly those with them were.
My wife wanted to use the ladies as we departed and says that it looked clean but there was an overpowering smell and many of the toilets had no seats.
Blue Flag beach – I think not, and would hate to know what tourists to KZN might think.
