Members of Salt Rock Surf Lifesaving Club (SRSLC) cleaned out, painted and fitted the first floor of the clubhouse as a coffee shop, from December 2013 to May 2014.
They sold cool drinks, ice creams, toasted sandwiches, sweets and delicious cappuccinos etc. This was a god-send to the parents and kids alike as they did not have to traipse to the nearby tearoom for chips and juice it was right here. It was also safer as younger kids could hang out in the shop in safety while waiting for their parents to pick them up. It was an oasis in a desert, a meeting point for families and kids. It offered more than just a place of refreshment but a local vibe was built up and the place was always busy and full of fun and laughter.
The Mayor visited and said that they were going to renovate the building, expanding the area with a wooden deck all around as well as moving the lifeguards upstairs with better facilities and ablutions. He closed the building down and said in six months, just before Christmas 2014, it would be opened.
It is now Christmas 2015 and the coffee shop area has been abandoned with a mix of street vagrants, municipal workers, car guard attendants and life guards’ friends just hanging around. The kids have to walk to the tearoom for refreshments now, the two employees have lost their jobs and to what end? We request that the local councillors and the mayor please revisit the area and allow the SRSLC to re-establish their coffee shop in the interests of locals and tourists.
